Surrender to StormFor the third year in a row, the Harwood Art Center will celebrate National Poetry Month (that’s this month, comrades) with a collaborative art and poetry exhibit. Surrender to Storm combines Cynthia Fusillo's mixed-media work with complementary poetry by Barbara Rockman for a unique show merging word and vision. The exhibit opens on Saturday, April 8, with a reception from 2 to 5 p.m. 242-6367.

More Poetry—Another Poetry Month celebration will occur Saturday, April 8, at the New Mexico State Poetry Society’s open reading at the Coronado Barnes & Noble on Louisiana. Bring some of your own verse to spew to the crowd. 3 p.m. Free. 872-0332.

Still More Poetry—Free this Wednesday afternoon? The Albuquerque Professional Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications (AWC) will be hosting its third annual poetry slam on Wednesday, April 12, at Tanoan Country Club (10801 Academy NE). And this one ain’t just for the ladies. Poet Maresa Thompson will again act as moderator, and expect performances by local literary celebrities like Danny Solis and Dale Harris. A pre-performance luncheon will begin at 11:15 a.m. with lunch being served at 11:45. The actual slam begins at 12:15 p.m. The fee for the luncheon is $20 for AWC members and $25 for nonmembers. First Friday—It’s citywide this time around, so top off that gas tank and get ready to roll, art fiends. This Friday, April 7, is the First Friday gallery tour. From a fiber art show at the Art Alliance Gallery to Rob Thalmann’s nude dudes over at New Grounds Print Workshop, the tour should provide a little something for everything. Elephant Man—A production of Bernard Pomerance’s The Elephant Man will be staged starting in late May at the Vortex Theatre (2004 1/2 Central SE). Director Robert Johnson will hold auditions for the play this Saturday, April 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with callbacks on Sunday, April 9. You don’t have to be particularly funny-looking to apply.
