Woo hoo! It’s the weekend again, and this time, it’s elongated. That is, unless you are one of those responsible for publishing a paper come sleet, snow or armageddon. Just incase your weekend isn’t already packed with awesome activities, family time and charred hot dogs, here are a few more tempting events to keep you busy ’till its back to work on Tuesday. Enjoy, dang it!

Everything’s Going Down at the Zoo —What aren’t they doing at the Bio Parks this summer? Going to the zoo and staring at the sleeping lions was always enough for me when I was a kid. Now, there are dance performances, story tellers, camel rides, music concerts and that doesn’t include the aquarium or botanical gardens. Hum … maybe they did have all those things, I was just never cool enough to do them. Anyway, for another amazing attraction, check of the Backyard Bugs exhibit at the Rio Grande Zoo. The zoo also has horse and buckboard rides at the Heritage Farm from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday; the Animal Encounters Show at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and the Rainbow Lorikeet feeding exhibit everyday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Next Thursday, June 1, the African drum, dance and story telling extravaganza Umoja will open and run through July 9 every Thursday through Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and noon at the zoo’s amphitheater in the Adventure Africa area. It shouldn’t be missed.

Also, if you are interesting in volunteering at any of the Bio Parks this summer, check out the volunteer orientation on Saturday, May 27, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the Colores building at the Rio Grande Zoo. They are looking for people to help out all doing fun stuff like playing with marine invertebrates and teaching people how to fish at Tingley Beach. Call 764-6245 for more info.

Hot for Hot Rods— For more car-related fun, check out the Second Annual Hot Rod, Motorcycle, Classic and Custom Car Memorial Weekend Car Show (say that five times fast) at the Route 66 Casino on Saturday, May 27, and Sunday, May 28. If the title wasn’t enough to pique your interest, on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Fiesta del Porsche 2006 Skill Racing event will take place. Yup, and event in which the title includes the words "Porsche" and "racing." Reminds me of the first time I got a speeding ticket driving along Tramway … There’ll be cars, food and entertainment from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Race … I mean … drive responsibly on over.
