Fundraiser de Cubano– “La Noche de Rueda: Benefit Gala for La Rueda de Guanabacoa Film Project” is a fundraiser to benefit a locally produced documentary on Cuban salsa dance. The fundraiser will take place Sunday, June 11, from 5-10 p.m. at Salón Ortega in the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth Street SW). In August 2004, Albuquerque dancer and instructor Sarah “Sarita” Streng traveled to Cuba with cinematographer Alvaro Rangel to begin making a documentary about a championship Rueda de Casino group from Guanabacoa, a suburb of Havana located southeast of the city. The two obtained 20 hours of footage of the group performing and rehearsing, along with interviews with dancers as well as of individuals who played roles in popularizing the dance in Cuba in the ’60s and ’70s. One result of the trip is an eight-minute promotional trailer about the film, which will be shown to patrons on June 11 at the NHCC as part of a fundraiser to help get the crew back to Cuba to finish production later this year. The gala event will also include dance exhibitions, a dance lesson, Cuban food and drink, brief presentations by Streng and others involved in the film and a performance by local salsa band Calle 66. Cost for the event is $40. For more information call: 288-8713.
