Shebangs in the Fe
You’ve gotta see Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer's 17th-century reds in person.

When I say Weekend Art Party, you say Santa Fe. Ready, go! No, really. Grab your hat and sunscreen and go. Head out to the Fe this weekend for some of the summer’s most distinctive (and rare) art gatherings. As the centerpiece for your art escape, attend SHEBANG! at the Center for Contemporary Arts (1050 Old Pecos Tr.). From 11am until 7pm on Saturday, June 14, this free, family-friendly party celebrates the CCA’s 35th anniversary (which makes it the longest-running organization of its kind in the Southwest). The shindig includes screenings of newly restored Charlie Chaplin films set to live music from Smokin Bachi Taiko and DJ Holiday. Local food trucks and breweries will be on hand, plus plenty of art, photography and dancing projects for the kiddos to plunge into while you kick up your heels to live music from Wagogo, Broomdust Caravan and more local favorites.

Don’t miss the CCA’s three new exhibits.
The Curve features award-winning photography from CENTER; Air Force: Aesthetic Experiments in Aviation occurs in conjunction with Currents New Media Festival; and Dear Erin Hart reveals an artistic response to identity theft.

To start your carousel of carousing spinning with some zeal, take the opportunity to peep a rather rare 17th-century oil painting at
FOUR CENTURIES: European Art from 1600 to 1950, presented by Matthews Gallery (669 Canyon Rd.). Featuring art across the ages, the exhibit boasts a painting attributed to an influential Franco-Flemish artist frequently commissioned for work by none other than Louis XIV, Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer. According to gallery owner Lawrence Matthews, art fans will wander through Lautrec and Picasso’s Paris and Gauguin’s Tahiti to Monnoyer’s Versailles. The exhibit runs from June 13 to 19, with an opening reception Friday, June 13, at 5pm.

Within walking distance of Matthews,
Turner Carroll (725 Canyon Rd.) also offers a new exhibit, Lined, featuring new work by Kate Petley. Hanging through June 29, the exhibit’s opening reception is also Friday, June 13, from 5 to 7pm. The Colorado-based artist is known for creating enigmatic abstractions painted on industrial film, suspended in acrylic resins and mounted on aluminum. Petley’s new work simplifies the process to get at the essence of the individual elements.

This weekend, Santa Fe beckons. Go, soothe your palate with exquisite visual aperitifs, and then dance the summer sun to bed.
