Alibi graphic artist Corey Yazzie talks about the following photo essay documenting the Artwalk in Downtown Albuquerque on Friday the 1st of June:

My first stop was at El Chante: Casa de Cultura where the opening reception for “Rooted in Famlila y Tierra, Stories of Barrio Resistance & Resilience & Martineztown” was in full swing. It was a modest gathering of friends and family featuring poems and newspaper articles honoring South Barelas residents Adela Martinez and Ramon Leyba.

Next was the gallery Relic which featured the symbol-dominated paintings of Thomas Christopher Haag and beautiful drawings/cutouts by Henry Hutchinson. Next door at Corpus Arts, a collection of Black & White photographic studies of the male figure entitled “Bruce of Los Angles” filled one side of the small, almost hidden, gallery/library.

As I was making my way down to other locations, I decided to see what the 514 gallery was showing. The show titled “21st Century Cyphers” comprised art by Karla Knight, Matt Magee, Mirtha Dermisache, Bart Exposito, Walter Robinson, Nina Katchadourian, Joel Swanson, Gina Adams, John Phillp Abbott, Asuka Goto, and Sky Hopinka.

My last stop for the evening was at Ace Baber Shop. There photos of 7 land-based sculptures were a center piece to the group of expressive paintings and drawings done by New Mexico artist Lori Largo.
