With Valentine’s Day fast approaching, you may be wondering how to impress your sweetheart. If you’re lucky, you’re with someone who likes the nudge-nudge wink-wink and wants to kick cancer’s ass. This Friday, Feb. 7, Josh Jones and Black Market Goods have you and your honey-bunny covered with The Hot Damned!, an art show with some added heat. Plan to stay out late because Jones has one hell of an evening planned.

First, it’s gonna get loud thanks to amazing local music. Bandwidth No Name brings the funky hip-hop vibe, Bat Wings for Lab Rats comes with the punkhopadelic sounds, and DJ Wae Fonkey bridges the gaps with dope beats.

Then, it’s gonna get hot. A lingerie catwalk with wearable art by Albuquerque Clothing Company and Jones includes hand-painted corsets. Body painting by Plug-Ugly, Davin Coriz and Jelo will turn you into walking art. And best of all, way past the kiddies’ bedtime, burlesque babe Alyxzandrea Asher takes off (almost) all in her inimitable style.

Jones has assembled a sweet smorgasbord of art and promises “eyegasms” galore with the Pop surrealism of Marc Quetone, a foxy pin-up from Eric Swanson and Randy Boogie’s hip-hop and Navajo-influenced contemporary art. More art from Xavier Quintero, Jessica Victoria, Daryl Begaye and Free Art Friday’s Stephanie Galloway may cause lightening of your wallets, all for a good cause.

Jones has considerable motivation for the evening’s festivities. He’s had his own cancer scare, and all of the participating artists have lived through the secondhand effects of the disease. To that end, donations at the door will go to the UNM Cancer Center. A raffle will run during the night, the proceeds going directly to Lillian the Cancer Ninja in support of her ongoing battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Jones met Lilly through various fundraising events and was won over by her bravery and indomitable spirit. Jones says, “I thought I’d help out as I can, which means throwing art shows.”

“Throwing an art show” is decidedly an understatement. The fun starts at 7pm at the Amped Performance Center Downtown sandwiched between the KiMo and the
Alibi offices at 415 Central NW. Amped is an all-ages venue, but treat this as an 18+ show. (Sorry, kids, that’s the privilege of getting older.) This First Friday, show a little love for local music and art while breaking cancer’s cold, black heart.
