The Fourth of July is one of the few holidays when the publishing industry slows down (the others being New Year’s Day, Christmas and Thanksgiving), which means we get a three-day weekend! Now, one could spend said holiday grilling buffalo burgers, drinking brews and lighting fireworks for 72 hours straight—but where’s the art in that? (Unless, of course, you’re actually creating a piece of performance art dissecting American culture, but I digress.) One could also spend the weekend visiting galleries throughout Albuquerque starting on Thursday, July 3, at the N4 th Gallery’s opening of Getting Things Done: 2008 VSA AmeriCorps Exhibition from 5 to 8 p.m. and continuing on Friday and Saturday with opening receptions at multiple galleries from 5 to 8:30 p.m. both days. For a complete list of participating galleries and their exhibits, visit artscrawlabq.org.

Art For The Dogs

Sumner & Dene Creations in Art (517 Central NW) is also participating in the holiday arts crawl with a First Friday opening reception from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The exhibit, Four Legged Fun: Animal Art To Humor People, features works by Marjie Bassler. A percentage of the proceeds from the exhibit, running through July 26, will be donated to the Animal Humane Society of New Mexico. For details, call 842-1400 or visit Sumner & Dene’s LOOK Award-winning website, sumnerdene.com.

Extension Of Beauty

The Indian Pueblo Cultural Center announced last week that it will extend Timeless Beauty: Pueblo Women Artists of the 20 th Century through Aug. 31. Timeless Beauty features the work of eight well-known Pueblo women artists who are considered matriarchs and have greatly influenced the world’s perception of Native American art. Included in the group are Maria Martinez of San Ildefonso and Pablita Velarde of Santa Clara, just to name a few of the talents. Call 843-7270 for info.

Sunday Sesh

The Filling Station hosts a weekly classical music event every Sunday to much success (as an apparent difficulty to find seating would indicate) called The Church of Beethoven. To add to the Sunday fun, The Filling Station is now also hosting weekly open mics, dubbed The Sunday Sessions, from 6 to 8 p.m. Each week features a different medium including poetry, cabaret and improv. This Sunday, July 6, is a poetry jam featuring poet and performer Frank Calabretta. There’s a $5 suggested donation at the door and reservations wouldn’t hurt. Call 243-0596 for details.
