Can you smell the sweet scent of testosterone wafting through the clear winter air? Then you must be Downtown on Fourth Street. Follow the smell to the Downtown Contemporary Art Center (105 Fourth Street SW) for the He Show, an exhibit of work by New Mexican photographers, all of whom happen to be male. The show, which just went up last week, features innovative images by some very talented photographers such as Barry McCormick, Steve Malavolta, David Ondrik, Lincoln Draper, Pat Berrett, Kip Malone, Rick Scibelli, Wes Naman, Benjamin Winters and Steve Bromberg. Celebrate the birthday of the good doctor—Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., that is—by wheeling on over to UNM's Rodey Theatre for The Earth is One Country and We Are All Its Citizens. The 16th annual event takes place this Saturday, Jan. 15, at 7 p.m. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Jamal Martin, public health consultant for the New Mexico Office of African American Affairs. Before Martin begins his speech, there'll be plenty of multicultural entertainment including Japanese folk dancing and Israeli dance as well as appearances by storyteller Ramona King, Los Reyes de Albuquerque, Robert Mirabal, Two Hearts Celtic music and the Highland High School Choir. Two architects pool their resources to present a slide show at Bookworks during which they will discuss ways to improve the visual environment in New Mexico. Mark Childs, author of Squares: A Public Places Design Guide for Urbanists, will discuss strategies for creating vital public places. Tony Anella, author of Saving the Ranch: Conservation Easements in the American West, will discuss ideas on preserving rural open spaces. An exhibit of four talented digital artists is currently on display at the KiMo Theatre's gallery presented by the newly formed Digital Artists of America Association. Bruce Shortz, George Bajszar, Jared Tarbell and Barry McCormick all use various digital tools and techniques to create their contemporary images. The show runs through Feb. 25.
