Abstraction in Action— This week, Artspace 116 opens an exhibit of abstract paintings by Lilly Fenichel. Fenichel moved from Vienna to Britain during World War II and then migrated to California in the early ’40s. A key figure in the abstract expressionist movement in San Francisco, Fenichel now lives in New Mexico where she continues to create art. A reception for her exhibit will be held this Friday, March 16, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Artspace 116 is located at 116 Central SW. For details, go to www.artspace116.org or call 245-4200.
Duende!— The Duende Poetry Series is back at the Anasazi Fields Winery in Placitas. This time around, the event will feature a quartet of fantastic local male poets—Levi Romero, Mitch Rayes, Dale Harris and John Macker. Stop by the winery this Sunday, March 18, at 3 p.m. to chug some local vino and absorb some local poetics. A suggested donation of $3 will pay off your karmic debt for the afternoon. Bring extra cash to purchase books and CDs from the poets. For directions, call 867-3062.
Short, Sweet— Hamlet is great and all, but it does go on and on, doesn’t it? There’s something to be said for brevity, and you’ll find out what that thing is this week when CNM joins forces with the Vortex Theatre for a 10-minute play festival. Tickets are a mere $5—a steal! And the beauty of this format is that if one of the plays ain’t all that, at least it’ll soon be over and you’ll be on to the next one. The festival runs Thursday, March 15 (beware!), through Sunday, March 18, at the Vortex, located at 2004 ½ Central SE. For details, call 247-8660 or go to www.vortexabq.org.
