Arrrrrrbuquerque— Everybody’s favorite swashbuckling musical comes to UNM’s Popejoy Hall Wednesday, May 9. If Gustavo “The Mexican” Arellano isn’t quite your bag (see the books section in this week’s Alibi ), this classic Gilbert and Sullivan operetta should satisfy your more traditional entertainment instincts. The plot’s pretty simple: Our hero Frederic is apprenticed to a band of pirates after his nursemaid misheard instructions from Fred’s father, who asked that he be apprenticed to a pilot . Hijinks ensue. England’s Carl Rosa Company mounts this rum-soaked spectacle to the accompaniment of a full orchestra. Tickets range from $25 to $42. Tamarind— Renowned local printmaking center the Tamarind Institute hosts a closing reception for an exhibit of work from the 2007 graduating lithographers and collaborating artists at UNM. The reception occurs Friday, May 4, from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Tamarind Gallery at 110 Cornell SE. Admission is free. There will almost certainly be snacks. For more information, call 277-3901. By the way, construction on the Tamarind Institute’s new home at 2500 Central SE is scheduled to begin in June.

Send in the Clown— Quality clowning is a thing most people rarely get to witness. Most people keep a firm grip on preconceived notions that clowns are either hoity-toity pretentious performance artists or lowbrow entertainments primarily suited to birthday parties for four-year-olds. Courtney Cunningham is a different kind of clown. In the persona of Poofy du Vey, she portrays a neurotic woman who has been discribed as “sort of like the illegitimate American crack baby of Mr. Bean and Bubble from “Absolutely Fabulous”—but charming.” She’ll be doing her thing for two weekends in a row at VSA’s N th Fourth Theatre (4904 Fourth Street NW), Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. through May 13.
