“Jesus of the People” by Janet Mackenzie
Personal Jesus— Hallelujah! The stereotypical blond, blue-eyed vanilla Jesus isn’t quite as prevalent as he used to be. A new exhibit opening this weekend at JHS Gallery displays work from around the country that places religious iconography in a contemporary context. Janet Mackenzie’s “Jesus of the People,” depicting Christ as a black woman, will be on exhibit for one day only. Other images in the show include a Black Madonna and Jesus rescuing a drag queen.

Who Do You Say That I Am? Visions of Christ, Gender and Justice opens Saturday, May 12, with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. that will include a performance by the Taos Gospel Choir. The show runs through June 23. (505) 758-0280, www.JHSGallery.com.

Pez Kachinas— Steve White might be treading on dangerous ground with his new line of Kachina Pez dispensers, but so far he hasn’t had any negative feedback. “They’re like saints to me,” he says. “Like painting Jesus, Guadalupe or the Buddha. They feel good to paint, but I’m only doing them for a while. It’s sacred, and I treat it as sacred.” So far, he says, people love them. White’s Kachina Pez are for sale at Todos Santos in Santa Fe (125 East Palace, Suite 31, 505-982-3855).
