New Grounds Print Workshop and Gallery is not asking for gifts to celebrate its 12-year anniversary. Instead, it’s hosting the works of Ando Shinji, a Japanese master printer who merges Western sensibilities with a Japanese aesthetic. This Friday, Sept. 5, New Grounds hosts an opening reception/anniversary party from 5 to 8 p.m., which includes music, food and a raffle for $250 in artwork. Shinji will be present on Friday, Sept. 19, from 6:30 to 7 p.m. for a discussion about his multi-plate etching process. The show is on display through Sept. 27. Call New Grounds at 268-8952 with questions.

Culture Shock Chocolate Cake

While New Grounds isn’t asking for presents, The Filling Station will happily accept the chocolate cake you’d like to bring to its birthday party this Saturday, Sept. 6, from 4 to 8 p.m. Barelas’ old-garage-turned-art-space is celebrating its first year of theater, classical music and anything-goes open mics with a potluck party. The Filling Station folks will provide some food and beverages, but everyone is encouraged to bring something to share—chocolate cake being a favorite for 1-year-olds strapped in highchairs. Performances by Filling Station talent and photographs by Mary Hobbs will entertain at this free social gathering. Many happy returns!

Culture Shock Shoot!

One could argue photographing art is an art in itself. In fact, I’ll argue that. The Rio Rancho Art Association offers a workshop this Saturday, Sept. 6, called "How to Photograph Your Art Work." The title sums it up. As a person who views posters, press releases and previews for shows on a daily basis, I cannot stress enough how much a nice, high-quality photo of your artwork makes a difference. Pat Berrett gives the free presentation—which focuses on 2-D work—at the Esther Bone Memorial Library at 10 a.m. Call 891-5012 ext. 3128 to register, or e-mail rnankin@ci.rio-rancho.nm.us.
