Erect those maypoles, kids; it’s May Day! For the Celts (shout-out to my forebears), it was the occasion of Beltane, the beginning of summer. One ritual involved the passing around of Beltane cakes, one piece of which would be blackened. The recipient of this unlucky piece would be mock executed. Kind of like waterboarding.If you’re in the mood for something as unique but a little less gruesome, take part in OFFCenter’s Albuquirky House Tour . The owners of some of Albuquerque’s most unusual and artistic homes are opening the doors to their quirky casas as part of a fundraiser for OFFCenter’s do-gooder arts quest. The tour takes place on Saturday, May 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. and tickets are $25. Fitting, then, that Friday, May 1, sees the College of Santa Fe‘s final student show ever: Aeroembolism . You see, these young artists are like budding flowers … and proletariat workers. OK, I’m kind of crappy at metaphors, but there’s definitely a spirit of rebellion underlying the staging of this show. CSF is at this moment strapping on its cement shoes for a final swim, but many of its students have refused to be dragged down. Instead, Aeroembolism will feature video, music, performance, experimental theater and Second Life Internet collaborations as a way to look to the future. Joining the featured student artists will be performance artist and musician Liz Solo, who will be performing in Second Life with the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse, the members of which will be playing live from around the world via the magic of the Internet. It all takes place at the College of Santa Fe’s Studio One (1600 St. Michael’s Drive) from 7 to 9 p.m. Hurry over before the place gets converted into the world’s largest Starbucks.And May I inform you that David Sedaris will be reading at the Kiva Auditorium on Saturday, May 2, at 8 p.m.? It’s given every year to the most outstanding act at what is one of the most important festivals in the world. Previous winners include Kristen Schaal of “Flight of the Conchords” and Demetri Martin, who now has his own show on Comedy Central. Congratulations to our talented duo.
