A couple months ago, SolArts, the art and performance space located along Central between Downtown and the University, expanded its operations by opening a new theater thrift store. The organizers opened the store partly because they needed a place to store their largish collection of theatrical costumes. As a way to help generate funds, the organizers intend to place as many costumes as possible from SolArts productions in the store following the run of the show. Right now, they mainly have women's attire, much of it vintage, but they also have wigs, feather boas, gloves, books, some freaky props and other theatrical accessories. Weird and wacky stuff, and none of it is priced over $15. They've also got a rack of rentals with each costume costing only $10 per night. The 11th Annual Juried Graduate Student Exhibit opens this weekend at UNM's Jonson Gallery. As in years past, the show offers an ideal opportunity to check out what some of the best emerging artists in the city are creating. This year's show was juried by Santa Fe gallery owner Linda Durham and photographer Joel Peter Witkin. It opens with a reception this Friday, March 18, at 5:30 p.m. and runs through May 6. A new exhibit called Figures and Hats features paintings by Angus Macpherson of various figures in hats. Best known for his evocative landscapes, Macpherson reveals a more human side to his artistic personality in this fascinating show opening this Friday, March 18, with a reception from 5 to 9 p.m. at MoRo Gallery (806 Mountain NW).
