Brevity, they say, is the soul of wit. We here at the Alibi plan to put that old cliché through a blazing trial by fire during our upcoming Ridiculously Short Fiction Contest.

Are you up to the challenge? We think you are. Do you have what it takes? We think you do.

Let's be honest, though, it won't be easy. We're asking fictioneers far and wide to compose the best stories they can muster in less than 101 words. Yes, this isn't called the Ridiculously Short Fiction Contest for nothing. We want plot. We want action. We want character development. We want romance and revenge and sacrifice and redemption. And we want it—yes, that's right—in a measly 100 words or less. To make matters worse (or better depending on your temperament), you must include your title, if you have one, in this strict word count.

Think of it as haiku fiction. Think of it as peewee yarn-spinning. Think of it as a bowl of Bing cherries for all we care, just so long as you abide by our ironclad rules and entertain the pants off us in the process.

Send your entries to Alibi's Ridiculously Short Fiction Contest, 2118 Central SE, PMB #151, Albuquerque, NM 87106. You can also e-mail them to steve@alibi.com. We will allow up to three entries per person. Deadline is Friday, June 4.

The best entries will be published in our June 16 issue. Winners will be showered with all kinds of unbelievable prizes.

Well? Get writing! Those wee bitty stories ain't gonna write themselves, you know.

Culture Shock

Mariposa Gallery in Nob Hill has been a staple in the Albuquerque art community for three decades. The gallery, which specializes in high quality folk art, will be throwing a 30th birthday bash for itself on Friday, May 7, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Swing by to celebrate Mariposa's indisputable contributions to Albuquerque's artistic landscape. While you're there, check out the exhibit Flights of Fancy, featuring work by Gretchen Wachs, Jenny Lind, Stephen Kilborn, Luis Mojica, Amanda Tinsley and other artists who have shown their work at the gallery over the years. Upstairs in the adjoining Galerie E, you should also take a peek at a small exhibit of encaustic collages by Bebe Krimmer. Mariposa Gallery is located at 3500 Central SE. 268-6828.
