I can't tell you how excited I am about our upcoming Ridiculously Short Fiction Contest. Submissions are already streaming in and although the Alibi's dedicated supreme council of fiction judges hasn't yet tackled the pile, I'm personally convinced there are dozens of gems hidden inside that mountain of creativity. The deadline is Friday, June 11, at 5 p.m., so there still might be time to get your ultra-short fictional masterpieces into the Alibi. Stories must be no longer than 100 words (including title, if any). Three entries maximum per person. Send all stories to 2118 Central SE, PMB #151, Albuquerque, NM 87106-4004 or e-mail them to steve@alibi.com (no attachments). Winners, as always, will be showered with prizes and glory. Best of luck to everyone. We will print the winners and honorable mentions in the June 24 issue of the Alibi.

A star-studded band of international celebrities will descend on Albuquerque's Nantucket Shoals Seafood Market (5415 Academy Boulevard NE, 821-5787) this Saturday, June 12, for the glitzy launch party of Gail Rubin's A Girl's Pocket Guide to Trouser Trout. Rubin, a local author, delivers all the nitty gritty details every modern woman needs to know to hook, catch, gut and fry a modern man. The humorous book won first place in the non-fiction category in the 18th Annual SouthWest Writers Writing Contest. Stop by Nantucket Shoals from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. to meet Rubin and pick up a couple pounds of delicious wild-caught salmon while you're at it. If you can't make it Saturday, Rubin will also make an appearance the following day, Sunday, June 13, at 3 p.m. at Bookworks (4022 Rio Grande Blvd. NW, 344-8139).

Darla Hallmark is currently exhibiting her risque color pencil and mixed media drawings at Unseen Gallery, located just east of Nob Hill at 108 Morningside NE. Titled “Fantasy, Fear and Sexuality,” the show includes work that's both imaginative and somewhat graphic, exploring some of the darker aspects of human sexuality and fantasies. Hallmark will be in the gallery this Saturday, June 12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to meet with viewers and discuss her work. Unseen Gallery's policy is to drape mature or disturbing images, of which this show has plenty, but the owners still discourage people from bringing kids into the gallery during this exhibit. If that doesn't pique your interest, I don't know what will. Call 232-2161 for details.
