Culture Shock

Anyone who thinks culture in Albuquerque can't possibly extend beyond the border of the tiny bubble encompassing Downtown, Nob Hill and Barelas should consider making an excursion to the Heights. It only seems like a trip to Siberia to those who haven't yet made the journey.

Consider Exhibit 51, a relatively new contemporary art venue located at 5100 Juan Tabo NE. The best time to check out the gallery's swank digs is the third Thursday of each month, when Exhibit 51 hosts “X-Press-Oh” a monthly music and art event.

This Thursday, June 16, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. you can gaze into the abstract and figurative creations of Enrico Embroli, Wiley War and Gino Miles in a show called Uncommon Crossroads. The evening will also feature music by jazz guitarist Tony Cesarano.

Refreshments and dessert will be provided. Roll on up to the outer limits of Albuquerque. It's an alien culture, but I think you'll find that the little green gentlemen and ladies who live up there are fine folk. And the art ain't bad either. For details, call 275-1551 or log on to www.exhibit51.com.

Even in the land of the free and the home of the brave, “All Printing Presses are Not Created Equal.” John Oelfke, owner of one of Albuquerque's own feisty pint-sized publishing operations, Central Ave. Press, will deliver a lecture with this very title and theme at the next meeting of the New Mexico Book Co-op. Swing by the Hometown Buffet at 9261 Coors NW in the Target Shopping Center this Wednesday, June 22, at noon to hear Oelfke's presentation. You'll have to pay for your own lunch and beverage, but the lecture is absolutely free. For details, call 344-9382 or e-mail info@nmbookcoop.com.
