The best teachers eagerly admit how much they learn from their students. There's no shame in that. No one can be a teacher all the time. Sometimes you might be a mentor. Sometimes you might be an apprentice. On any given day, most people are probably a little of both.

A new exhibit opening this week in the gallery space of the Albuquerque Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (2414 Central SE, Room 130) highlights the way artists both learn from and teach each other. Appropriately titled Mentor and Apprentice, the show features contemporary fine art tapestries created by Donna Loraine Contractor, Nancy Kozikowski and Hilary Heyl. These three artists attempt to focus viewers' attention on the shifting roles artists can play in their relationships to one another, while at the same time highlighting the creative results of such organic, mutually beneficial relationships.

Culture Shock

Plenty of excellent events already have been organized this year to help raise funds for the upcoming National Poetry Slam 2005, to be held right here in downtown Albuquerque, August 10 through August 13. There'll be over 65 teams from all over North America and possibly Europe competing for the prize.

The latest fundraising event will take place this Thursday, June 30, at 7:30 p.m. at Santa Fe's luxurious Lensic Theatre. Local faves like Danny Solis, recent winner of the International Poetry Slam in Oxford, England, and Lisa Gill, a Pushcart Prize nominee, will wow the crowd with their fiery verse.
