Catch them when they're young … and cheap. Many singers in the Santa Fe Opera's Apprentice Program have gone on to impressive national careers. Actually, this season, eight former SFO apprentice singers have come back to Santa Fe to perform principle roles in main stage productions.

In other words, this year's apprentices are next year's prima donnas. This Sunday, July 24, promising young apprentices will present a free concert at Congregation Albert (3800 Louisiana NE) right here in Albuquerque. It'll feature arias, duets and ensembles from such faves as Cosi Fan Tutte, Susannah, The Marriage of Figaro, Carmen, Rigoletto, La Boheme and Die Fledermaus as well as selections from zarzuela and popular song. The performance begins at 3 p.m. Tickets are not required. Seating begins one half-hour before the show on a first come, first served basis.

Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird sets the standard for legal fiction. It's the kind of novel that makes you wonder why John Grisham even bothers. The story of small town Alabama lawyer Atticus Finch and his defense of a black man falsely accused of attacking a white girl is both funny and heartbreaking. I saw a theatrical version several years ago in Chicago that did a fine job of translating Lee's tale to the stage.

Freedom Community Theatre is presenting a new production of To Kill A Mockingbird at Hope Evangelical Free Church (4710 Juan Tabo NE). The play runs for one more weekend, Friday, July 22, through Sunday, July 24. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. For details, call 293-1087 or go to

CORRECTION: In late April, in an article previewing the Gathering of Nations Powwow, the Alibi mistakenly ran a photograph by local photographer Carole Devillers without crediting her. Wow, stupid! The Alibi deeply regrets the error. If Alibi readers would like to see more of Devillers' photographs—in venues where she gets proper credit—she's got two solo shows currently on display, one at Anderson Studio and Gallery (1423 Central NE, 242-2531) and the other at La Siringitu Vegetarian Restaurant (1501 Mountain NW, 244-9105). She's also part of a cool group show at SolArts (712 Central SE, 244-0049). Check 'em out!
