It's a well-known fact that some of the best contemporary art talent in New Mexico comes out of the graduate art program at UNM. These young artists aren't just talented, though—they're also organized.

Every year UNM's Graduate Art Association hosts a popular silent auction during which students and faculty donate fantastic pieces of art to generate funds for various scholarships. Yes, it's a worthy cause, but it's also a virtually surefire way to pick up some sweet works of art for unbelievably low prices. So if the Christmas spirit ain't movin' you, then at least let your greed for cheap, high-quality art entice you.

This year, the event will take place on Friday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Harwood Art Center (1114 Seventh Street NW). The Tamarind Institute will be putting on a print raffle, and there'll be grub, beverages and live music performed by Casadimanza among others. For full details, call 242-6367.

Culture Shock

George and Ira Gershwin's jazzy music combine with Ken Ludwig's zippy dialogue to make for one of the most popular musical theater shows in recent memory. A new production of Crazy for You opens this weekend at UNM's Popejoy Hall. An adaptation of the Gershwins' 1930 hit Girl Crazy, this new show, which was first performed on Broadway in the early '90s, is set in the Wild West. The story is fast, funny and clever, and the musical itself is stuffed full of Broadway standards from several classic Gerschwin musicals.

The show will be performed Friday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, at 2 and 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 5, at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $55, $45 and $35, except for the Sunday evening performance, which is $50, $40 and $30. Order online at www.tickets.com or by calling (800) 905-3315 or 925-5858.
