Kropotkin Lives!— Ever heard of Autonomist Democracy of Albuquerque? Me neither. The group seems to be some kind of local anarchist organization. “Anarchist,” of course, is a loaded word these days. The ADA means it in the original sense of the term—that is, promoting voluntary social organization, direct democracy and consensus as the ideal building blocks of society. The group is having a benefit at Out ch’Yonda (929 Fourth Street SW) this Saturday, July 22, at 7 p.m. to raise funds for a planned alternative bookstore in this Barelas performance space. Sounds like a great idea. Admission is $6. For details, go to adacollective.org.

Simon Says …— Take the edge off the summer heat with a few icy cool phrases from Acoma pueblo poet Simon Ortiz. One of our region’s finest literary practitioners, Ortiz will make an appearance this Wednesday, July 26, at UNM in the Zimmerman Library’s West Wing to deliver a talk called “Indigenous Sovereignty and Identity: Land, Culture, Community.” The event is free.

Master of Puppets— So, you know that giant puppet taking up space in your closet? Looking a little worse for wear, isn’t it? Well, luckily for you Lisa Dominic will be teaching a “giant puppet renovation and mask making” workshop on Saturday, July 22, at OFFCenter (808 Park SW). This is just one in a series of free workshops to prepare participants for the upcoming We Art the People folk art festival to be held on Aug. 12. Dominic’s session will be presented from 1 to 4 p.m. For details, call 247-1172.

Sex, Lies and Lingerie— Doug Montoya and the crew over at Gorilla Tango take a crack at Carl Sternheim’s classic farce The Underpants , a play revolving around the scandalous exposure of a lady’s underwear in public. The relatively new script is adapted by Steve “The Jerk” Martin from the original 1910 play. Come on down to the Gorilla and laugh your buns off. Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m., Sundays at 6 p.m., through July 30. $15. 245-8600.
