Being a smartass,

I could compose a structured

five-seven-five call

To get you readers

to write haiku contest verse

Alibi print.

That seems tedious

and completely pretentious.

Plus, it has been done.

And, beyond that, I

detest structured poetry.

Here are this year’s rules:

You can choose from eight

different categories

which are as follows:

Bath salts, Mitt Romney,

local, sci-fi/fantasy,

eroticism, and, of

course, traditional.

Write five syllables.

Then write seven syllables.

Then write five again.

Up to two poems

in each category by

Aug. 27.

We will pick the best

and print them in the paper.

You will have glory.

Winners will get cool

stuff from local businesses

we’ll announce later.

Email your haikus:

com. Subject: “haiku.”
