Art, music, poetry, vended wares and delicious food come together in a two-day, three-venue, border-busting extravaganza dubbed AZ/NM Connection. With over 60 participating artists from both states—from graphic stylist Jeremy “Eyerock” Arviso to surrealist painter Lalo Cota to geometry-minded designer of cuteness Yai Cecream—and eclectic musical acts like Shining Soul, Wake Self, Indigenize and Bat Wings for Lab Rats, it must be for our own good that this group show is divided into three sub-events. Taken all together, the effect might be simply overwhelming. The showcase gets underway at Nob Hill staple Masks y Más (3106 Central SE) on Friday, Aug. 29, from 3 to 7pm. Festivities for the senses continue that evening at El Chante: Casa de Cultura (804 Park SW) from 7 to 10:30pm. Then a final surge of talent, rhythm and taste crests at The Talking Fountain (4207 Lead SE) on Saturday, Aug. 30, from 3pm to midnight. More info can be found on Facebook if you need it. Monday, Sept. 1, is Labor Day, when we celebrate workers’ contributions to America’s economy and culture by buying mattresses at unheard-of savings. Yay freedom! Luckily, a happier fate than retail hell awaits you at Tractor Brewing’s Wells Park location (1800 Fourth Street NW) with the Fierce Women Warriors party from 5 to 8pm. Honoring not just workers but especially the half of the workforce with lady parts, the FWW shindig costs $15 at the door and includes a free beer. In addition to brews, enjoy a slew of artsy-craftsy goods from talented women vendors like practical stitchery whiz Pipermade and detail-oriented beautifier Hippie Chique Henna. Comedian and character actor Rick Overton (Groundhog Day, Dinner for Schmucks) headlines in the entertainment department, while Trixie ConQueso and her Cheesy Delights pay vampy tribute to girl groups and the Tracey Whitney Trio jazzes things up. So skip the furniture store mega-sales, and solemnize this holiday for workers with libations, laughter and a break from your labors.
