Thrift store shoppers know there comes a day when you discover an item too personal to be carelessly abandoned on some shelf. It might be a love letter on the first page of a book or a family’s photo album. In that intrusive moment, you wonder why it’s there and imagine the lives of those it once belonged to. FOUND Magazine is the best collection of these sorts of objects. It’s a testament to the strange, communal story we share, our paths crossing and diverging. FOUND collects the fragments that broke free, that evoke personalities from some unknown past. On Tuesday, Oct. 23, FOUND Magazine will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with a live show at the Guild Cinema at 8 p.m. Part of a 79-city tour, Davy and Peter Rothbart will present items that bring to life some of the best submissions. Davy Rothbart is the magazine’s editor, as well as a contributor to NPR’s "This American Life." He will share narratives from his new book of personal essays, My Heart is an Idiot . Peter Rothbart is also an editor, a songwriter and executive director of the urban gardening organization We Patch. He will be singing frequently hilarious and sometimes haunting songs based on notes submitted to FOUND . Seats are $8. Men in Armored Tights —If OPP isn’t your preferred breed of art, perhaps you seek a less ironic and less postmodern performance with more razzle dazzle. A state-of-the-art production of Batman Live hits the Santa Ana Star Center Oct. 17-21. Tickets and showtimes can be found at santaanastarcenter.com. The high-tech stage version promises too many villains for a coherent plot: The Joker, Catwoman, The Riddler, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy and The Penguin all make appearances. One can only assume they’ll be working together as a super villain group bumbling toward Batman’s demise. While you may be feeling a void from knowing there will not be another Christian Bale / Christopher Nolan movie, Batman Live could temporarily sate you until next decade’s great comic book retelling appears. I’m sure you, like me, are hoping it will be the much needed exploration of Dr. Strange.
