Leave the virgins in peace. On Sunday, April 25, The Vortex Theatre (2004 1/2 Central SE) hosts a staged reading of Phil Bock’s A Familiar Story . Directed by Barbara Bock, the play spins a tale of politics, murder and family in 1980s Central America. Phil Bock, a retired cultural anthropologist, is a fixture in Albuquerque theater, so this preview of his original work is a real treat. The reading starts at 1 p.m. and is free. A talkback with the playwright and actors will follow. Go to vortexabq.org for more. Poetry and jazz. Two great tastes that either taste great together or produce a bilious sludge. For Outpost’s Friday, April 23 edition of Wordspace, all signs point deliciously to the former. Writer Lisa Gill will present work from her new book Dark Enough , published by local La Alameda Press. The slim volume features lyric works on the mysteries of the night sky. She’ll be accompanied by trombonist and composer Michael Vlatkovich, poet and musician Mark Weber, and percussionist Dave Wayne, performing as The Michael Vlatkovich Trio. The show at Outpost Performance Space (210 Yale SE) starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, $5 members and students. Call 268-0044 or go to outpostspace.org for information. Sick of hearing me talk about poetry? Who cares! I’m steering the boat here, and we’re on a collision course with Metaphor Island. V.B. Price, Rebecca Aronson, Anne Valley-Fox and Myria Mandell have been there, and they’ll also be at Bookworks (4022 Rio Grande NW) on Sunday, April 25, for a National Poetry Month Coffeehouse beginning at 3 p.m. The poets will read their own work and participate in a moderated discussion on the state of poetry today. There will also be coffee. Berets are optional. See bkwrks.com for details.
