It’s important to try new things. I’m somewhat of an expert at this. I’ve tried seven art forms, six sports, five languages and cooking. It is safe to say that I’m fairly horrible at all but one of these (hint: not cooking), but I’m better for having tried. In fact, I’m always on the lookout for the next thing I can be not very good at. Join me, won’t you?

On Saturday, Sept. 12, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., head over to El Camino Real International Heritage Center, 30 miles south of Socorro at Exit 115 (300 East County Road 1598), for the
fourth annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration . There will be a showing of the documentary El Camino Real and a talk and demonstration at 2 p.m. by Nancy C. Benson, author of New Mexico Colcha Club: Spanish Colonial Embroidery & the Women Who Saved It . She’ll discuss the domestic heritage of New Mexico women and show off some examples of unique embroidery. The event is free with admission to the monument, which will run you $5 (pre-adults under 16 are free). You’ll probably need directions, so go to elcaminoreal.org.

On Wednesday, Sept. 16,
artist Wendell Unzicker leads a workshop in colored pencil techniques at the Loma Colorado Main Library Conference Room (755 Loma Colorado) in Rio Rancho from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Though the colored pencil is often relegated to a 10-year-old’s school supply list, this is for adults. The workshop is free, but space is limited to 12 people, so stop by the library’s Adult Services Desk to register. Call 891-5013, ext. 3033 for more information. I hope someone colors a unipegacorn, which is my favorite subject for this medium.

Santa Fe Poet Laureate Valerie Martinez will teach an advanced poetry workshop beginning on Wednesday, Sept. 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the new Pete V. Domenici Education Center at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth Street NW). The workshop will continue on Sept. 23 and 30, and Oct. 7 and 14. The cost is $35. Experienced poets who’d like to sharpen their skills and get feedback from other writers are encouraged to attend. Martinez is the author of two collections, with a third to be released next year. For more information, go to nhccnm.org.
