New Year’s resolutions are for suckers. Why would anyone choose to turn over a new leaf in January, a month best reserved for footie pajamas, hot chocolate and weight gain? The real time to explore and expand is now. Though you may not have been in school for decades (and while summer doesn’t officially begin for another month), there’s something uniquely exhilarating about the end of May. So make your summer arts resolutions now; coincidentally enough, I have a few suggestions for this week to start you off.
The good news? You’ll only have to go to one place to do it. On Sunday, May 16, Bookworks (4022 Rio Grande NW) hosts two readings featuring a total of three authors. At 3 p.m., Diana Joseph ( I’m Sorry You Feel That Way: The Astonishing but True Story of a Daughter, Sister, Slut, Wife, Mother, and Friend to Man and Dog) and Robert Wilder ( What I Would Tell Her: 28 Devoted Dads on Bringing Up, Holding On To and Letting Go of Their Daughters) will read from their respective works. At 5:30 p.m., don Jose Ruiz shares passages from his book The Fifth Agreement. Written in collaboration with his father—don Miguel Ruiz, the author of the best-selling The Four Agreements— the book draws from traditional Mexican beliefs to provide paths to inner peace. Don’t break your brains on this one; the City of Albuquerque’s got it figured out for you. Sundays in May, head to the Old Town Plaza from 1 to 9:30 p.m. for Shootouts, Folk and Tempestuous Tango . Combine the family fun of re-enacted shootouts with the New Mexico Gunfighters Association, the plucky sounds of folk musicians and the sultry swing of tango into one weird, amazing outing. So Albuquerque. See cabq.gov/crs/newfun.html for news on what other events the city will Frankenstein for you.
