BEDtalks—Albuquerque’s best lecture series, wherein presenters deliver their address from the comfort of bed—is back for the eighth time on Thursday, Sept. 21. Hosted by GRAFT Gallery, this time with proceeds going to benefit Gatas y Vatas VII (a festival of women and non-binary performing artists happening in Santa Fe and ABQ in October), the talks vary wildly and never fail to thrill. This time around presenters include Mello Sanchez on “The Importance of Community Radio,” Eileen Shaughnessy on “White Supremacy: It’s Not Working,” and Anodyne Smith on “Raising Chickens.” Bed time is at 7pm at Tricklock Company (110 Gold SW), you’re in with a $7 to $10 donation.
Ah, the charm of words well spoken. If you’re a devout lover of verse like I am, you’ll want to head to the KiMo’s Poetry Party on Friday, Sept. 22. This event—in part a celebration of the KiMo’s 90th birthday—will be emceed by former Albuquerque Poet Laureate Jessica Helen Lopez and will feature readings by Don McIver, Mary Oishi, Damien Flores, Liza Alvarado and Tanaya Winder, as well as teen up-and-comers Zavier (ZMan) Thompson and Sarita Sol Gonzalez. Inaugural laureate Hakim Bellamy and current Poet Laureate Manuel Gonzalez will also take the stage. Accompanying music will be provided by Keith Sanchez. This event is free, and the poetry takes motion at 7pm at the KiMo (423 Central SW).
Pick up some good vibrations by picking up Vibrator Nation: How Feminist Sex-toy Stores Changed the Business of Pleasure at our very own feminist sex-toy store, Self Serve (3904 Central SE). The book’s author, Lynn Comella will be visiting the shop on her national book tour for a reading, discussion and book signing. Comella’s newest work draws from more than 80 interviews with feminist business-owners, including the founders of Self Serve. If you needed an excuse to visit our city’s long-standing favorite sex store, here it is! The reading starts at 7:30pm on Friday, Sept. 22, and is free to attend.
Queer Xicana sci-fi writer and author of two previous books (The Pulse Between Dimensions and The Desert) Rios de la Luz will be at Bookworks (4022 Rio Grande NW) on Wednesday, Sept. 27 with her latest work, Itzá. This newest piece of speculative fiction is about a family of water witches and using “the magic passed down from ancestors to heal.” de la Luz will be participating in a reading and a brief discussion of her work starting at 6pm. Anyone interested in reading a broader scope of science fiction and fantasy will certainly want to pick up a copy of the novel, which will be available for purchase at that time.
