Tricklock Company—our indomitable Downtown experimental theater troupe—continues the run of their season opener Welcome to Retroland this weekend on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Sept. 13, 14 and 15, at 8pm each night). This piece of theater explores an unlikely relationship between lead Mariana and handyman Grohl against the backdrop of a toxic lakebed. Expect nothing short of magic from the talented players of Tricklock, even in this unsettling environment. Tickets for the show at Tricklock Performance Laboratory (110 Gold Ave. SW) start at $12 for students and seniors—with a small number of $5 “student rush” tickets available at the door each night. Found Objects Worship At The Alter
Santa Fe’s Natalie Christensen and London’s Jim Eyre collaborated on a three-tiered exhibition opening soon a the UNM School of Architecture and Planning (2401 Central Ave. NE). Designed around photography but utilizing multiple platforms—gallery space, Instagram feeds, an outdoor mural and a website—the two aim to recreate dreamlike experiences a la an ’80s horror flick wherein the main character becomes lost in dreams after a series of sensory deprivation experiments. To that end, the artists explore the psychological impact of the imagery we are constantly inundated with in social media feeds. Found Objects Burning Books
Pulitzer Prize winning author Caroline Fraser, who took home the award for her book Prairie Fires, a biography on well-loved writer Laura Ingalls Wilder, comes to Rio Rancho this Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1pm. Fraser will read from one of her works—an extensive catalog not just of biography, but several titles in other nonfiction disciplines—and will participate in a discussion, followed by book signing. Don’t have one of Fraser’s books yet? Pick one up at this free event at the Loma Colorado Library (755 Loma Colorado NE in Rio Rancho).
Found Objects Fine Arts For Freedoms
Kicking off UNM’s participation in the 50 State Initiative is a talk from multi-disciplinary artist Aram Han Sifuentes. Her work is described “at the intersection of fiber, social practice, and pedgaogy.” While she may move in art world spheres, her work remains staunchly for the disenfranchised. Sifuentes will share the practice of creating her physical work, and how she has manifested protest through sewing circles, exchange and more. The talk inaugurates a series of events produced by the UNM Art Museum in collaboration with For Freedoms. This totally free talk with a renowned artist happens on Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 5:30 to 6:30pm at Keller Hall.
