Found Objects Venus In Bananas

Josephine Baker set the bar for sexy in interwar Europe. Dubbed the “Black Pearl,” Baker made it out of the slums of St. Louis and onto the finest French stages as a dancer wearing practically nothing but bananas. She was the first African-American to star in a major movie. She had a pet cheetah, palled around with Hemingway, served as a French spy in the resistance and adopted a dozen children. Want to hear more? Assistant Professor of European History at the University of New Mexico Tiffany Florvil will expound on Baker’s fascinating life at a public lecture titled “Josephine Baker: A Black Venus in Europe” on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 3pm at UNM School of Architecture’s George Pearl Hall Auditorium (UNM Main Campus). Tickets are $20 for the general public and $15 for Albuquerque International Association members. For more information on this all-ages event, see abqinternational.org.
