Founded 35 years ago, Mariposa Gallery is owned by Liz Dineen and Jennifer Rohrig. It features a new show monthly, with an opening on the first Friday of every month. The gallery focuses on exhibiting the artwork of New Mexico artists and features a great variety of works. Jewelry, ceramics, glass, textiles, wood, paintings, and mixed media are sprinkled throughout its small building (with a tiny second floor that shouldn’t be ignored).

New Mexico artists often dominate the shows. Everywhere in the gallery are works featuring plants, animals, insects, colors of the desert and the sky, and the Day of the Dead.

In the very center of the gallery lies a circle of glass cases with a vast array of jewelry: from metal to turquoise, from large to delicate. Here, too, the artists of New Mexico show their individual and distinctive styles. Some of the jewelry is composed of stones that seem similar to what one might find in the riverbed of the Rio Grande.

Until April 30, the gallery will feature the art of Kenyon Thomas, Mary Thomas, Sarah Siltala, and Rachel Popowcer. In May, the featured artists will be Eric McCollon and Lauren Tobey. The gallery, located at 3500 Central Ave, is open Monday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday noon to 5 p.m. For more, go to
