“I put this together,” Terry says, “because it seems like in Albuquerque there are often a million openings crammed onto one night. I wanted to focus people's energies, to make it exciting to go to several noncommercial galleries on a single night.”
And so, behold, Terry's brainchild, the first Alternative Gallery Hop, will take place this Friday, April 16, starting at 5 p.m. Terry will be presenting a show of his own work at the Harwood Art Center (1114 Seventh NW, 242-6367) consisting of photographic constructions, lenticular prints and short films designed to represent domestic space. Other exhibits at the Harwood will include Becky Holtzman's drawings and mixed media work accompanied by the poetry of Jennifer Frank; an installation by Mayumi Nishida; and large-scale paintings by David Leigh transformed into small-scale jigsaw puzzles.
Hopping over to [AC]2 (301 Mountain NE, 842-8016), you'll find Past Participle, an installation combining work by Josh Powell, Matthew Rana, Will Robison and Joel Waldrep examining the machinery and aesthetics of transportation. At 516 Magnífico Artspace (516 Central SW, 242-8244), you can catch the tail end of the truly wonderful exhibit Illustrious, made up entirely of work by artists who incorporate text into their art.
Over at OFFCenter (117 Seventh NW, 247-1172), you'll find a photographic exhibit examining an ancient pottery technique from northern Cameroon along with modern sculptural figures of women. Out ch'Yonda (929 Fourth SW, 385-5634) will present an installation and performance piece called Rites of Passage. The Trevor Lucero Studio (500 Second SW, 244-0730) will offer up an exhibit of work exploring the dialectic between poverty and abundance. And the Walls (510 Central SE, 489-2644) will screen its video installation, Through the Night Softly.

Artists at Fort 105 (105 Fourth Street SW, 246-8475) and Fort 508 (508 Central SW) will also open up their studios to the public that night, and Basement Films will screen 16mm films about hair (yes, hair) at a to-be-announced location.
From 5 to 8:30 p.m., each venue will supply refreshments. An after-party will be held at the Walls at the end of the hop with grub, drink and a couple bands for your partying pleasure. So, break out the pogo and get ready to do some serious hopping.
“The focus is on noncommercial, nontraditional contemporary art spaces,” says Terry. “My hope is that this event will encourage other people to organize more like it. I just want to draw in people to get them to appreciate what's going on in Albuquerque.”
