At Bound to Be Read itself, a new poetry group will meet on Tuesday, July 1, at 7 p.m. The organizers will discuss various ideas for presenting poems in public, from traditional open mics to competitive slams to songs and publishing. Bring that tattered notebook filled from cover to cover with blistering poetic fury and give it a read. All styles are welcome.
We've got poverty, sprawl, pollution and limited water. What will happen to our city in the future? Does Albuquerque even have a future? On Thursday, July 10, at 7 p.m. at Bookworks (4022 Rio Grande NW, 344-8139), two of New Mexico's most celebrated writers, V.B. Price and Stanley Crawford, will chat about our city's many problems in a discussion moderated by Ron Chapman, host of the SouthWest CoffeeHouse radio program. A book signing will follow.
Over at Page One (11200 Montgomery NE, 294-2026), on Saturday, July 12, at 3 p.m., UNM history professor Richard Melzer will sign his new book When We Were Young in the West: True Stories of Childhood. Based on memoirs, oral histories, diaries and autobiographies from the likes of Billy the Kid and Douglas MacArthur, Melzer's book looks at the Southwest's past through the eyes of famous children.
Speaking of children, if you've got youngsters, you might want to haul them over to the Barnes and Noble at Coronado (6600 Menaul Blvd. NE, 883-8200) on Saturday, July 19, at 3:30 p.m. Critically acclaimed children's author Edith Tarbescu will be reading from books like The Boy Who Stuck Out His Tongue and Annushka's Voyage.
