The National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth Street SW) has been banging out weekend after weekend of events. This Friday and Saturday, May 16 and 17, New Mexico Arts brings the first-ever gathering of Matachines groups from the Southwest to the NHCC for two days of dances and panel discussions that are free and open to the public. Matachines dancers, known for their large masks with beads usually covering the eyes, will perform the story of El Monarca Montezuma and the triumph of good over evil. Matachines groups can be found in Mexico, as well as Northern New Mexico and border towns. This weekend’s event marks the first time groups from all over the state will meet and perform at the same location. Dances take place every hour from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the Plaza Mayor both days. The Last Black Market?
The news of Out ch’YondA’s fate was announced via e-mail in February and all e-mails since haven’t indicated a change in plan. This Saturday, May 17, Out ch’YondA hosts another of its popular Black Market events featuring local arts, crafts and performances. This Black Market holds another element: The auctioning off of art, furniture, appliances and other useful things in preparation for Out ch’YondA’s closing in June. Youth In Theater
School’s out, or almost out, and summer is practically here. If you or someone you know is of the youth denomination, there are a number of opportunities for involvement in local theater this summer. There’s FUSION Theatre Company’s six-week summer class for girls ages 11-14, A Girl and A Stage . The program starts on June 2 and runs through July 11, and no prior acting experience is needed. Call 766-9412 for details and registration. Opera Unlimited, Inc. is holding its eighth annual Summer Youth Opera Day Camp beginning June 9. The camp is open to all school-age students and culminates in a fully staged production in July.
