The newsletter-style e-mails from Sol Arts always start with the same headline: "Here’s what’s next at Sol Arts!" The e-mail I received last week was no different, except what’s next at Sol Arts is nothing. While it’s sad to see a local, grassroots art space close its doors, the folks at Sol Arts are doing it for a positive reason. The members, including UNM theater professor and Sol Arts founder Kristen Loree, have decided to devote their time and focus into their own artistic creations and put running art space on hold, at least for now. Plans are already in the works to reopen the space in late 2008 or early 2009, but that’s about all the e-mail detailed. Until then, Sol Arts will "Maintain the Glow!’ during the final weekend of its last production in its east Downtown location (712 Central SE, 244-0049), Boy Gets Girl by Rebecca Gilman and directed by Kathryn Gourley. The show runs Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $12 general, $10 students and seniors. This Sunday, Dec. 16, catch the last all-ages local music show starting at 6 p.m. It’s $5 at the door to see A Shattered Hope (from San Diego), 2 Be Announced and Bullets Over Hollywood. Or help the Sol Arts folks out by relieving them of some of their stuff (like furniture, props, costumes, art and electronics) to help cut down on inventory. Sol Arts’ moving sale starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 22, and whatever doesn’t go will be donated to charity or other nonprofit theaters. Thanks for supporting the local art community, Sol Arts. Pro Musica Grammy Nod
A quick shout out to Santa Fe Pro Musica regarding the Grammy nomination it received for its recording of Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde/The Song of the Earth. The album, nominated in the Best Small Ensemble Performance category, was recorded as a collaboration with the Smithsonian Chamber Players in 2006. The winners will be announced on Feb. 10, 2008. Congrats, Santa Fe Pro Musica! Keep it classical!
