The building that houses Classic Century Square was built by R.P. Tinnin Sr. in 1956. It was initially occupied by White’s Department Store. At that time the White’s store was one of the largest retail buildings—at 56,000 sq. ft.—in New Mexico. Whites sold a large variety of merchandise from sporting goods to furniture, appliances, tires, auto repair services, etc. When it opened in 1956, across the street from the new JC Penny store, it was certainly the talk of the town and provided a wonderful retail experience for all of Albuquerque. This unique three-story, glass-fronted brick building, it’s expansive atrium and retro staircase has been a symbol of the ’50s and ’60s architectural style and is still a draw to many that identify with that era. Even today’s youth tend to admire the “cool” building built decades before they were born. The building has become a real landmark in Albuquerque and will continue to be for generations to come.In 1985 R.P. Tinnin’s son, Tom Tinnin, decided to convert White’s Department Store into an antiques and collectibles retail mall. From its beginning, Classic Century Square has been the premier location for these items and many more. At one time it housed approximately 150 vendors. Currently Classic Century Square is reinventing itself to attract not only new vendors, but broadening it’s customer base with a wider variety of merchandise such as antiques, collectibles, furniture, glassware, jewelry and much more. Tom Tinnin’s children, Megan, Courtney and Robert Tinnin have taken the helm of Classic’s management and have many great new and exciting ideas for the store’s future. For potential vendors and customers alike, Classic Century Square will continue to be the premier retail establishment in New Mexico. We encourage you to come visit and enjoy the ambiance of the building and have a great shopping experience.
