O’Leary’s finest hour: The Stink of Flesh

Looking for something to do this Saturday morning? How about kicking it old school? I’m talking elementary school style. The Kosmos, the coffee house / art space located at 1715 Fifth Street NW, launched Kosmic Toonage earlier this month. This free, nostalgic cartoon program runs on the venue’s big screen every Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon. And if that’s not enough to get you out of bed, they’re offering bowls of sugary-delicious cereal for just $1.50. Of course, they also sell coffee, tea, breakfast burritos, bagels and more. But that’s not really in the spirit of the event, is it? Pull up a couch, eat a bowl of Lucky Charms, watch some “Popeye the Sailor Man” … and feel free to wear your pajamas! Log on to www.thekosmos.org for details.

Reel World: The Horror! The Horror! The Horror! The Horror!

The Canada-based horror news and reviews site Horror-Movies.ca recently posted an editorial on “Five of the Best Indie Horror Movies.” This list covers the last five years or so and includes one film that should be familiar to Albuquerque residents. The Stink of Flesh was the 2004 film that helped spur Albuquerque’s no-budget horror trend. (It’s also a film that, in the interest of full disclosure, I acted in.) Nice to know somebody out there is watching. Rounding out the list are 2008’s Spiral , 2006’s Automaton Transfusion , 2008’s Splinter and 2005’s Feast . You can check out the article here.

Reel World: Vegas Via Albuquerque Vegas Via Albuquerque

The new Joel Silver-produced TV pilot “The Odds” took over Downtown Albuquerque last week for filming. The series is described as a crime drama about homicide detectives in Las Vegas. It stars Donald Faison (“Scrubs”) and Hayley Ramm (young Jean Grey in X-Men: The Last Stand ). The pilot will shoot through early April. I’m assuming that—like “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” before it—only the pilot will be shot here. (Our supply of casinos being somewhat limited.) I’m also assuming that Faison’s regular gig on ABC’s ill-advised revamp of “Scrubs” is no more. (Seriously, stop beating that poor dead horse, guys.)

Reel World: Hungry For Screentime? Hungry For Screentime?

I Am Alive: Nando Parrado’s Story , a documentary about the infamous 1972 Andes plane crash survivors, begins shooting this month in Angel Fire. Producers are looking for male actors ages 18 to 35 with a “Latin or European look” for B-roll re-enactments. Shooting will take place April 8 and 9. This is an unpaid position, but travel may be compensated. If you’re interested, submit a photo to kdunn@amspictures.com or visit iamalivethefilm.com.
