The Instituto Cervantes is proud to present the second annual Cine en Construcción film series. The series starts this Thursday, Oct. 4, and continues every Thursday night through Nov. 1 at the National Hispanic Cultural Center. Cine en Construcción is a collaboration between the Festival Internacional de Cine de Donostia–San Sabastián (Spain) and Rencontres Cinémas d’Amérique Latine de Toulouse (France) and is designed to promote and distribute independent films from Latin America. This year’s selection includes films from Colombia and Argentina, including La Primera Noche (Oct. 4), Fugaz (Oct. 11), Ana y Los Otros (Oct. 18), Capital Rancho (Oct. 25) and El Transcurso de las Cosas (Nov. 1). They’re Baaaack
Wanna get in the mood for Halloween? Fathom Events is sponsoring a special one-night-only screening in honor of the 25 th anniversary of Poltergeist . The screening will take place locally on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Starport Theater. In addition to being scared silly by Tobe Hooper/Steven Spielberg’s classic horror flick, viewers will see a 15-minute never-before-seen “glimpse into the real world of poltergeists.” Tickets are on sale at www.fathomevents.com.
A Mountain Of Movies
The Taos Mountain Film Festival returns Oct. 5-7 with a diverse slate of short and feature documentaries focusing on high altitude sports, culture and environment. Among this year’s special guests is world-renowned mountaineer Sir Chris Bonington, one of the world’s first “professional” climbers. Best in the Southwest Flash Animation and Motion Graphics Festival is a four-day hands-on training conference plunging participants into the nitty gritty of computer animation, motion graphics, broadcast design, interactive video and dozens of high-tech thingamabobs of which I have very little direct knowledge. After Effects gurus Chris and Trish Meyer, Disney animator Phil Nibbelink and flash animation expert Chris Georgenes are just a few of the professionals who will be on hand to share their skills and knowledge in a multitude of workshops, screenings and more.
