Starting Friday, July 20, the City of Albuquerque is sponsoring a weekly series of classic movies on Civic Plaza. The series kicks off with the 1942 romance Casablanca. On July 27, it’s the Western Lonely are the Brave. On Aug. 10, it’s the comedy Some Like It Hot. On Aug. 17, it’s the sci-fi flick The Day The Earth Stood Still. On Aug. 24, it’s the drama To Kill a Mockingbird. All films are free and open to the public. Screenings begin at dusk.

The Santa Fe Film Festival and photo-eye Books present a weekend of film screenings and book signings featuring Christopher Felver. Felver’s new book Beat documents the movers and shakers of the Beat Generation with its collection of images, text, ephemera, artifacts and reminiscence. On Friday, July 20, you can catch short films by Allen Ginsberg and Lawrence Ferlinghetti as well as the documentaries West Coast: Beat & Beyond and Coney Island of Lawrence Ferlinghetti starting at 8 p.m. On Saturday night, it’s the short film “Donald Judd’s Marfa Texas” and the feature Tony Cragg: In Celebration of Sculpture starting at 8:30 p.m. On Sunday, you get a collection of four films featuring musical icons Sonic Youth, John Cage and Cecil Taylor starting at 3 p.m. All events take place at The Film Center (1616 St. Michael’s Drive in Santa Fe).
Shootout Reloads
Friday, July 20, marks the shotgun start of the 2007 Duke City Shootout. For the next week, teams of filmmakers will be crisscrossing our fair city in a frantic quest to shoot, edit and premiere seven short films in only seven days. While the crews work overtime to make their premiere date (Saturday, July 28), you might want to check out some of the other events DCS has to offer. Starting Sunday, July 22, is the MiniCini Moviemaking Competition. Anyone interested in producing mini-movies for cell phones, BlackBerrys and other portable devices is encouraged to sign up and participate. Also opening its doors on Sunday is the Insomnia Lounge at Downtown Albuquerque’s Hyatt Hotel. This year’s Insomnia will feature software workshops, technology demos, discussions about trends in movies and emerging media, games, music, animation and much more. Starting Monday, July 23, is the inaugural Gameslam in which aspiring young videogame designers are asked to create the next gaming sensation.
