Experiments in Cinema: Version 3.0, UNM instructor Bryan Konefky’s third annual outing of experimental cinema from around the world, launches this Thursday with an evening of collage film. “Cut Up or Shut Up” will take place beginning at 8 p.m. at Albuquerque’s 516 ARTS (516 Central SW). This collection of cut-and-paste films will include work by Stan Vanderbeek, who inspired Terry Gilliam’s animation for the Monty Python comedy troupe, and Virgil Widrich, whose work “Fast Film” is considered one of the most ambitious collage films ever made.On Friday and Saturday, Experiments in Cinema heads over to UNM’s SouthWest Film Center for two days’ worth of eye-bending, head-scratching cinema. Special guests include Dallas Video Festival Director Bart Weiss and the musicians and filmmakers of Colorado-based post-punk psychedelia performance group Ichy-O. Things wrap up on Sunday with guest artist and legendary experimentalist Scott Stark presenting a program of his film/video work at the Guild Cinema in Nob Hill. Like movies? Short on time? Check out the annual Three Minute Film Festival, running April 18, 19 and 20 at The Screen in Santa Fe (1600 St. Michael’s Drive). A grand total of 44 films, all 180 seconds or less in length, will be screened. Many of the films are local, but others hail from as far away as Chicago, Hollywood, Toronto and London. The Film Society of Sierra County is sponsoring the Truth or Fiction Film Festival in Truth or Consequences this Saturday and Sunday. Screenings of shorts, features, animations and documentaries begin at 11 a.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is a mere $5 per day. Wednesday, April 23, UNM Continuing Education will host its first-ever New Mexico Professional Filmmakers Workshop. From 6-9 p.m., participants can hear about the latest techniques used in television series and films being shot right here in New Mexico straight from the mouths of leading film professionals. The price of this workshop is $59, and part of the proceeds will go directly to Friends of Film, Video & Arts. FoFVA members receive a $30 discount on the registration price.
