Local boxing legend Johnny Tapia will be the subject of a new documentary by filmmaker Eddie Alcazar. The documentary about the Albuquerque-born boxer’s often tumultuous career will feature candid interviews with Tapia, archival boxing footage, news segments and historical photographs. The Tapia family and the film’s production company are reaching out to fans, asking them to submit any Tapia photos, video footage or stories of the famous fighter. Reel World: Must Not Miss Must Not Miss
Albuquerque-born film actor Phil Duran ( The Righteous and the Wicked ) is making his writing-directing debut with the independent romantic comedy Missing You. In it, a lonely twentysomething (Lauren Myers) repeatedly avoids crossing paths with her soul mate (Spencer Wright) while navigating the ins and outs of the modern dating scene. The feature-length film will have a free test screening this Thursday, March 8, at KiMo Theatre. This is the first public viewing of the film, and the audience’s feedback will help steer the filmmaker’s final edit. Everything gets underway at 7 p.m., and there will be a Q & A with the cast and crew after the credits roll.
Reel World: Reel It In Reel It In
The newly created Reel New Mexico Independent Film Series launches on Thursday, March 8, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the La Tienda Center in Eldorado. In case you didn’t know (I sure didn’t), La Tienda is a shopping center attached to Santa Fe’s Eldorado suburb—which is located at 7 Caliente just off Hwy. 285. The first Reel New Mexico program will feature four short films by independent Santa Fe filmmakers. “Surreal Estate” by Lori Romero, “mistersky” by Paul Marcus, “Una Causa Noble” by M/K Productions and “Take My Hand and Walk With Me” by Marga Matakovich make up the opening quartet. Unlike film festivals, Reel New Mexico has no entry fee and gives no awards. Proceeds from the $5 suggested audience admission will be split among participating filmmakers after expenses are met.
