After six weeks of intensive training, the nine filmmaking students and 10 screenwriting students taking part in the 4 th annual Institute of American Indian Arts/ABC-Disney Summer Television and Film Workshop are ready to show off their skills. On Friday, July 27, at 6:30 p.m. the LTC auditorium on IAIA’s campus (83 Avan Nu Po Road in Santa Fe) will host a free public screening of five short films produced by Native American filmmakers in the program. On Saturday, July 28, Nancy Holley Hughes and Eileen Torpay will stage a public script reading for their new film The Resurrection of Honore Page: Black Cowgirl. Hughes and Torpay were recent awardees of a New Visions film contract through the NM Film Office. Their soon-to-be-shot feature follows the journey of minister Honore Page as she regains her faith and traces the voice of her Lumbee Cherokee grandmother to a ghost town in New Mexico. The reading will include excerpts from the script-in-progress as well as live music compositions and video imagery. The event will take place in the Wells Fargo Auditorium at the National Hispanic Cultural Center (1701 Fourth Street SW), beginning at 7 p.m. The reading is free and open to the public. Albuquerque Film Office Liaison, Ann Lerner, will be at the Taylor Ranch Library (5700 Bogart Street NW) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, for a free talk about the opportunities for film work in your own backyard. If you’ve ever wanted to work full time on a major film set or just be an extra for a day, here’s your chance to check out the action.
The Final Shot
The Duke City Shootout ends this weekend with some rapid-fire editing and a red carpet premiere. For the last week, seven crews of filmmakers have been shooting their short films in and around Albuquerque. With a little bit of luck, all seven films will be ready for their Saturday night gala premiere at the Kiva Auditorium. A screening/award ceremony for the completed films begins at 7 p.m. You can pick up tickets now by going to ticketmaster.com. They’ll run you $19— a buck cheaper than buying them at the door the day of the event.
