Day of the Woman– Maiden Fest and Sol Arts are celebrating International Women’s Day with “songs to wage peace, poetry and short films.” The event will take place Thursday, March 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sol Arts (712 Central SE). No word on what sort of films will be shown, but I’m guessing they’ll be … you know, womany .

Filmapalooza– The 48 Hour Film Project is a multi-city film festival that invites creative teams of filmmakers to script, shoot and edit a short film in only two days. The 48 Hour Film Project came to Albuquerque last year as part of the Duke City Shootout. This weekend, the 48 Hour Film Project is bringing its very first Filmapalooza Film Festival to Albuquerque. The film festival is a reunion, of sorts, for all the film crews across America who have participated in the 48 Hour Film Project over the years. Taking place March 8-11 at the Hyatt Regency, Filmapalooza is a chance for 48 Hour filmmakers from around the globe to meet each other, watch each other’s films, go to hands-on workshops, greet industry and film festival representatives and (of course) party. On Friday, March 9, acclaimed director Alexander Payne ( Sideways, Election, About Schmidt ) will give a keynote speech at the KiMo Theatre. This Q&A session, sponsored by the Albuquerque Film Office, will be free and open to the public. Tickets are available only at the door on the night of the event (first-come/first-served, obviously). Payne’s talk will last from 7:30 to 9 p.m. At 9 p.m., there will be a special screening of the “Best 48 Hour films of 2007.” For more information, log on to www.48hourfilm.com/filmapalooza.

Film Premiere Goes Small-Town– Believe In Me , an inspirational drama about a young man who gets a job coaching girl’s basketball at a small-town high school, was shot in New Mexico last year. This week, the based-on-a-true-story sporting drama will receive not one, but two regional premieres in Clovis and Portales, the two New Mexico towns that served as primary backdrops. On Thursday, March 8, beginning at 5:45 p.m., a free reception will take place across the street from the Chamber of Commerce in Portales. A Red Carpet premiere for local actors and actresses will follow. Screening will take place at the Tower Twin Theater (101 North Avenue A). Tickets are $4.50 for children, $6.50 for adults. Clovis, on the other hand, will have two screenings (one at 5:30, one at 9:30 p.m.) at the North Plains Cinema 7 on Thursday night. Tickets are $25 and include a gala reception between screenings. Believe In Me stars Bruce Dern and Samantha Mathis and will be hitting limited release this weekend, courtesy of IFC Films.
