Slammin’ Selections— Warehouse 21’s annual Slam ’n’ Jam is the latest in a long history of W21-sponsored youth video slams. On Friday, June 29, at 7:30 p.m., selected films will be “slammed” in front of a live audience and a panel of judges at The Moon (formerly Club Luna at 519 Cerrillos in Santa Fe). All these short (8 minutes or less) submissions came from local filmmakers between the ages of 12 and 21. The cost is free for teens and $5 for adults. Cast Off— The Kevin Costner film Swing Vote is holding an open casting call for extras on Saturday, June 30, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Belen City Hall (100 S. Main Street). The comedic film tells the story of a single father (Costner) in small town New Mexico who learns that a contentious presidential election has come down to one single vote—his! The movie will film in the Belen/Albuquerque area from July through September.

Stories on Film— Straight out of Austin, Texas, comes the “A German and a Mexican Tour.” This collection of non-traditional short films showcases the work of filmmakers Katja Straub and Miguel Alvarez. Both love to tell and collect stories—narrative or documentary. Their emphasis is on visual exploration, and this collection offers up everything from personal documentaries to experimental films. Drawing on their unique roots, Straub and Alvarez present a cross-cultural collection of film-based stories. A German and a Mexican Tour will pass through Albuquerque’s OffCenter Community Arts Project (808 Park SW) on Saturday, June 30. Career in Cinema— New Mexico has become one of the four top states in the nation for film production and is one of only two states offering comprehensive training for film workers. If you’ve been interested in looking into this burgeoning new field, you should know that Santa Fe Community College is offering an intensive six-month training program starting July 7. The program is designed to prepare area residents to join the film/media workforce.
