You can add TromaDance New Mexico to the growing list of local film festivals looking for entries. For the sixth year in a row, this Southwestern spin-off of Lloyd Kaufman’s infamous TromaDance Film Festival—held in Park City, Utah, every January—is returning to Albuquerque’s Guild Cinema. Festival dates are set for Nov. 20 through 22, but the sooner you start assembling your short- to feature-length Troma-style madness, the better. Deadline for submission is Oct. 16.

What’s SWACE? It’s the newly minted Southwest Animation Conference & Expo hitting Albuquerque this weekend. The event was bumped from February and the convention’s website isn’t seeing very frequent updates, but things seem to be coming together. The event will take place at the Albuquerque Grand Airport Hotel (2910 Yale SE) Friday, July 31, through Sunday, Aug. 2. There will be video showings, panel discussions, video game tournies, costume contests and a dealers room. Scheduled guests include Ralph Bakshi (legendary animator of Fritz the Cat, Heavy Traffic, Wizards, The Lord of the Rings and American Pop ), artist Andy Kuhn (“Marvel Adventures,” “Joker: Last Laugh”) and a number of voice actors (Mike Sinterniklaas from “The Venture Bros.,” Wendy Powell from “Fullmetal Alchemist” and Monica Rial from “Reservoir Chronicle: Tsubasa”). Reel World Sneak Peek For Paisners
The New Mexico Film Museum in Santa Fe, better known as the Jean Cocteau Cinema, is sponsoring a sneak preview of the locally lensed feature film Rejection by Paisner Brothers Studios on Saturday, Aug. 1. The 72-minute film tells the story of a guitarist in a punk band who gets into trouble when two characters from his past return to ruin his life with their deranged games. The film is directed by Jacques Paisner and is based on a short story from Paisner’s 2007 short story collection Albuquerque Blues . As a special added attraction, there will be a screening of Gary Farmer’s short “Powerball.” An after-party will take place at Corazón (401 S. Guadalupe).
