The eighth annual Native Cinema Showcase launches this Thursday in Santa Fe. Produced by the National Museum of the American Indian and Santa Fe’s Center for Contemporary Arts, this year’s film fest includes two venues and tons more programming. New and classic films, panel discussions, filmmaker Q&As and media workshops are all part of the mix. The showcase runs through Sunday, Aug. 23, at the CCA and a new state-of-the-video venue in Cathedral Park. Classic features include Nils Gaup’s rarely seen 1987 historical drama Pathfinder , the first indigenous film nominated for an Academy Award. Brand-new features include Georgina Lightning’s Native American boarding school drama Older Than America, starring Wes Studi. Run, do not walk to theaters this Thursday, Aug. 20. That’s the night that more than 400 theaters nationwide host a live RiffTrax screening of Plan 9 From Outer Space . In case you don’t know, RiffTrax are the work of Michael J. Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett, better known as the stars/writers of the late, great “Mystery Science Theater 3000.” (Check out some of their downloadable commentary tracks at rifftrax.com.) This Thursday, the boys will be at the Belcourt Theatre in Nashville, Tenn. riffing on Ed Wood’s classic clunker. You can catch a digital simulcast of the show locally at the Cottonwood Starport and Century 14 Downtown theaters. The show starts at 6 p.m. Tickets are available through fandango.com. The first annual Heart Gallery Gala and Golf: Backstage at the Movies sounds like a major hodgepodge of ideas—like half the committee members wanted to play golf and half wanted to sip cocktails with movie stars. Oh, well. Either way, the proceeds go to charity. The golf tournament starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Sandia Resort and Casino golf course. Sign-up for the event is most likely full at this point. Starting at 6 p.m., however, the movie part of the event gets underway with a VIP reception at Film Maker Production Services (2731 Broadway NE), a prop warehouse run by NBC Universal. Actor Val Kilmer is the celebrity guest host and the word “gala” implies lots of fancy food and drinks. Tickets for the gala part will run you $85.
