UNM is back in session, and that means the Student Union Building theater is back in business. The student-run Southwest Film Center is kicking off its fall semester this Thursday, Aug. 27, with a double-feature tribute to the late, great actor Karl Malden. A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront (both directed by Elia Kazan) will screen Thursday through Sunday. Upcoming films include the Best Director winner at the 2009 Cannes Festival (Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Three Monkeys ), a return visit for The Best of the Ann Arbor Film Festival and Peter Jackson’s 1992 horror comedy Dead-Alive . Reel World Bubonicon Is Dead
Bubonicon, New Mexico’s oldest science fiction and fantasy convention, gets underway this weekend at the Albuquerque Grand Airport Hotel. The 41 st annual convention runs Friday through Sunday. Saturday’s theme is the inspired (and demonstrably true) “Everything’s Better With Zombies!” Come celebrate the undead’s influence on film, books and comics with a “Zombies in Cinema” talk, a “Popularity of Zombies” panel discussion, a zombie makeup demonstration in the morning and a screening of the classic B&W creature feature Zombies of Mora Tau in the evening. On Sunday, Aug. 30, the Taos Community Auditorium will host a free screening of the one-hour KNME documentary “Painting Taos.” The film explores the colorful history that allowed six relatively unknown painters, known as the Taos Society of Artists, to turn a small mountain village into a premier American art destination. The Aldo Leopold Legacy Film Competition is looking for short films with a message of environmental stewardship, sustainability, environmental justice, wilderness management, living with nature and related subjects. The competition is open to filmmakers of all ages. There are two categories: five minutes or less and 15 to 20 minutes. The deadline for submission is Monday, Aug. 31. Competition screening will be at the Gutierrez-Hubbell House Alliance on Sept. 11. Filmmakers are invited to submit features, shorts, animation, documentaries, kids’ films, whatever—so long as it has a positive, inspirational environmental message.
