On Friday, Sept. 11, the New Mexico Film Museum at Jean Cocteau Theatre in Santa Fe will host the premiere of Tamarind King and Paul Glickman’s just-completed New Visions 2007 Contract Award winning short “El Salon Mexico.” Inspired by the exuberant composition by Aaron Copeland, the animated film was made using Photoshop and Illustrator and consists of more than 22,500 individual frames. Previous animated films by King and Glickman will also be screened. Speaking of the New Mexico Film Museum, the institution will sponsor a New Mexico Film Retrospective at the State Fair this month. Sept. 11 through 27, free screenings of classic, shot-in-New-Mexico films will be shown at the African American Performing Arts Center at Expo New Mexico. Screenings take place at 10:30 a.m., 2 and 7 p.m. every day (although the morning screenings are curtailed on Saturdays and Sundays). Film selection runs the gamut: The Milagro Beanfield War, Ace in the Hole, Them, Young Guns, Silverado, No Country for Old Men, Red Dawn, The Man Who Fell to Earth, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Convoy and many more. The second annual Creative Spirit New Mexico program is seeking American Indian applicants who are passionate about film, aged 18 and older, to participate in an intensive two-day moviemaking workshop. The workshop is designed to prepare students to work on the short film “Indios Primeros,” written by this year’s Creative Spirit short-script contest winner Roberto A. Jackson. The workshop is free, but is limited to 10 participants. It will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 20, at the VSA N4 th Art Center. Participants who successfully complete the workshop will be eligible for paid positions as apprentices or production assistants in the making of “Indios Primeros.” The film will be shot in and around Albuquerque Sept. 25 through 27.
