Maori Movie—The UNM Department of Anthropology will be welcoming special guest Maori filmmaker Mereta Mita to town as part of the International Indigenous Film Festival. The New Zealand native will be on hand Thursday, March 4, at 7 p.m. to screen and discuss her feature-length drama Mauri. The film centers on the trauma of a disturbed Maori man who confronts his tragic deception with courage and humility. The screening will take place in the anthropology lecture hall, north of UNM's Maxwell Museum. Tickets are $12 at the UNM box offices or at Tickets.com outlets. Cinematic Sisters—The UNM Women's Resource Center continues their enlightening “Reel Girls Film Series” with a screening of Night Girl on Friday, March 5, from noon to 1 p.m. The film documents the struggle of Han Ling, a Chinese teenager who prematurely enters the workforce as a go-go dancer to ease her family's economic burdens. The screening will take place at the WRC Group Room on UNM campus. Call 277-3716 for more information.

Rebel, Rebel—Zapatistas—Chronicle of a Rebellion follows 10 years in the formation of the Zapatista Army for National Liberation. This professionally produced documentary features Interviews with Zapatista leaders and follow the revolution from the armed uprising of 1994 through to the peaceful creation of the Caracoles (autonomous communities) in 2003. A screening of Zapatistas will take place on Saturday, March 6, at 6:30 p.m. at the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice (202 Harvard SE). There is a suggested donation of $2. SXSW Film—Although it's famous for its music line-up, the South By Southwest Fest in Austin, Texas, also contains some formidable film content. The SXSW Film Festival and Conference will take place March 12-16 (right before the annual music showcase). Highlights of this year's fest include conversation panels with Seabiscuit director Gary Ross, Animal House helmer John Landis, Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme and indie icon Jim Jarmusch. Film highlights include Kevin Smith's Jersey Girl, the shot-in-New Mexico thriller Blind Horizon and cult director Ryuhei (Versus) Kitamura's new flick Azumi.
