Doggy Deadline—This Saturday, Aug. 28, is the deadline to submit your short videos to the Fifth Annual All-Dog Digital Underground Short Film Festival (a.k.a. Dogfest 2004). If you have a photogenic canine looking for his or her 15 minutes of fame, then shoot your short (five minutes or under) dog-based digital video and send it (along with a $25 entry fee) to: “Three Dog Bakery, 9821 Montgomery NE, Albuquerque NM 87111.” First, second and third-place prizes ($500, $300, $200) will go to an animal rescue group of the winner's choosing. Home Again—The Santa Fe Film Festival is sponsoring a sneak preview of Home of the Brave, an award-winning documentary about the only white woman murdered in the civil rights movement. The film examines how an ordinary Detroit housewife became part of the 1965 civil rights marches, how she was killed and why her name is all but unknown today. Screenings will take place Sunday, Aug. 29, at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. at The Screen at College of Santa Fe. The film's producer, Nancy Dickerson will attend the screenings along with director/writer/co-producer Paola di Florio, editor Thomas G. Miller and Mary Liuzzo Lilliboe, daughter of murdered civil rights activist Viola Liuzzo, whose story is told in the film. All will take part in a Q&A session after the film. Tickets are $9 at the door. The College of Santa Fe is located at 1600 St. Michael's drive.

Bubonicon 36—Albuquerque's own science fiction convention is back for an amazing 36^th year. In addition to the usual lineup of author signings, art shows, dealers rooms and gaming tournaments, this year's con will feature several film-related events. The Media Room will be unspooling loads of sci-fi television, classic cartoons and a collection of Star Wars fan films direct from the San Diego Comic-Con. On Saturday, Aug. 28, guest artist David Mattingly, a former matte artist for Disney, will introduce one of the films he worked on, 1979's The Black Hole. On Sunday, Aug. 29, Dawn Matheson of Industrial Light and Magic will discuss moving storyboards and their growing importance in filmmaking.

And for all you local film fans, there will be a special panel discussion on “The Joys of Low-Budget Filmmaking” with the cast and crew of Albuquerque-lensed zombie flick The Stink of Flesh on Saturday, Aug. 28, at 6:30 p.m. Writer/director Scott Phillips, producer Shannon Hale and several of the film's stars will all be on hand. If you didn't get a chance to see the film during its recent sold-out Guild Cinema run, there will be a special screening at 11:15 p.m., Saturday night. If you don't want to stick around Bubonicon all weekend, you can purchase a $15 one-day pass that will get you the “Low-Budget Filmmaking” panel, the Stink screening and all the other Saturday shenanigans.
